The Mediterranean Diet.

Modeled after the eating habits from countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, the Mediterranean diet focuses on eating whole grains, nuts, beans, lots of fruits and veggies and plenty of healthy fats. It includes minimal amounts of red meat and moderate amounts of dairy. The best part? It’s super high in fiber.

Besides the Mediterranean Diet focusing on whole foods, it also focuses on other aspects of wellness including being active and eating with others.  Remember, being well is more than the absence of sickness, and it’s more than just physical health.

I do a lot of my meal planning, shopping and food prep on Sundays. If you don’t have a schedule like this, I’d highly recommend you start!  It makes the work week much more manageable, which also means you’re less likely to stray from the goal. Sundays at the VanDusen house look a little somethin’ like this:

Our breakfast and lunch (yes, our…..because my husband is willing to try anything, which makes him the bomb-diggity) for tomorrow consists of:

  • Ezekiel english muffin with hummus, avocado, spinach, cilantro, ground pepper
  • a smoothie (apple, spinach, avocado, ginger, almond milk and banana)
  • apple with almond butter
  • small serving of almonds
  • a big salad with lots of veggies

Dinner options are abundant, and I try to cook them ahead of time if possible. Stay tuned for what’s on tap this week at the VanDusen dinner table.

Until next time…

…eat food, not food products!

I have heard about this from my mom. I have been working on eating better because of a slight scare. (Will not go into details.) I do appreciate your blog and hope to get what I can out of it. Thank you for spending your time and effort to help those of us out. I will say that I have lost 20 pound and hope to lose more.
